Day 2: Returning to Your First Love
Jesus’ rebuke to Ephesus is direct: “You have forsaken the love you had at first.” They had not abandoned truth. They had not stopped working. They had not grown lazy in doctrine or endurance. But they had left behind the love that made all of it meaningful.
This is the danger of spiritual numbness. We can become so consumed with doing, defending, serving, and producing that we slowly lose sight of Jesus Himself. Love becomes assumed instead of pursued. Prayer becomes functional instead of relational. Scripture becomes information instead of invitation.
Jesus’ call is graciously simple: remember, repent, and return.
Remember what it was like to be overwhelmed by His grace. Remember the wonder of being forgiven. Remember the joy of knowing that the God of the universe loved you before you could offer Him anything. Then repent, not merely by feeling bad, but by turning around. Return to the practices and postures that once helped you delight in Him.
The way back to your first love is not found in trying harder to prove yourself. It is found in coming home to the One who has loved you all along.
Reflection Questions:
-When did you last spend time with God simply to know Him, not to ask Him for something or prepare for something?
-What has most competed with your affection for Christ lately?
-What did your love for Jesus look like when it felt most alive?
Application Points:
-Set aside ten unrushed minutes today to pray without asking God for anything. Focus only on worship, gratitude, and being with Him.
-Write down three ways Christ has shown His love to you personally.
-Identify one distraction or competing affection you need to turn from this week so you can more fully return to Christ.
