Day 1: The Danger of Going Through the Motions

It is possible to look faithful on the outside while growing cold on the inside. The church in Ephesus worked hard, endured hardship, rejected false teaching, and persevered for the name of Jesus. By many external measures, they seemed strong and healthy.

But Jesus sees what others cannot see. He sees beneath activity, reputation, service, and doctrine. He sees the heart.

This is a sobering mercy. Jesus does not only care about what we do for Him. He cares about whether we are truly with Him. A life full of Christian activity can still become spiritually hollow if love for Christ is no longer at the center.

Like a freshly painted garage filled with clutter on the inside, our lives can appear orderly while our hearts are crowded with distraction, pride, exhaustion, or self-reliance. Jesus lovingly invites us to examine not only our actions, but our affections.

Today, ask Him to reveal where you may be performing faithfulness instead of living in fellowship with Him.

Reflection Questions:

-Where in your life are you maintaining the appearance of faithfulness without genuine closeness with God?

-Are there spiritual habits, ministry roles, or responsibilities that have become routine rather than relational?

-What might Jesus see in your heart that others cannot see?

Application Points:

-Before beginning your day, pray honestly: “Jesus, help me not just to do things for You, but to walk with You.”

-Choose one ordinary task today and do it intentionally as an act of love toward Christ.

-Take five quiet minutes to ask God to reveal any area where your outward activity has become disconnected from inward affection.
