Idols In Disguise

May 4, 2025    Pastor Marcus Jackson

This message explores how hidden idols—things we secretly depend on for identity, security, or comfort—can spiritually numb us and hinder our relationship with God. Drawing from the story of Achan in Joshua 7, the sermon highlights how private compromise can affect not just individuals but whole communities.

We’re encouraged to recognize the “weights” we carry—like unforgiveness, pride, fear of failure, regret, and unresolved conflict—that often masquerade as harmless behaviors but actually compete with God for our trust and devotion. These idols whisper lies that keep us distracted, spiritually dull, and resistant to surrender.

Through Jesus, however, we’re offered a path to freedom. Unlike Achan, who stole and hid what belonged to God, Jesus gave everything and brought us into the light. We're challenged to reflect on modern idols such as busyness, technology, success, approval, and even empty religious routine. The call is to name these idols, surrender them to God, and replace them with worship, walking in the freedom and purpose Christ has secured for us.
