Day 4: Dying Daily, Living Free

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Daily. Not once, at a baptism or an altar or a crisis. Every day, in a hundred small, unglamorous moments nobody photographs: the credit you don’t demand for yourself, the sharp reply you don’t send, the apology you make first, the time you give when you’d rather be left alone.

Nobody claps for most of this. That’s the point. Discipleship isn’t mainly the one dramatic decision. It’s the accumulation of a thousand small deaths nobody sees but God.

Here’s what keeps this from being religious grit: you are not doing this alone, gritting your teeth a little harder each morning. Romans 6 says you were buried with Christ in his death so you could be raised to walk in a genuinely new kind of life. The same power that raised Jesus out of the grave is the power at work in you every time you die to something smaller so Christ can be bigger. This isn’t loss into a void. It’s a seed going into the ground before it produces something that could never have grown any other way.

What dies in this daily surrender was never the truest version of you. It was the version that could never have actually given you the life you wanted anyway.

REFLECT

- What did dying to yourself actually look like yesterday? One specific moment, not a general feeling.

- Where do you most need resurrection power today, not just effort?

- Do you tend to treat self-denial as loss, or as the doorway to the only life that’s real?

PRACTICE IT

Return to what you named on Day 1 one more time. Today, instead of the whole thing, choose one small, concrete act of obedience connected to it: something doable in the next hour. Do it before the day ends. Tonight, before you sleep, name out loud, even just to yourself, one place you surrendered and one place you resisted. Don’t manage the resistance with guilt. Bring it to him and ask for strength for tomorrow.

PRAYER

Jesus, teach me to die daily instead of once and then coast. Thank you that I’m not doing this in my own strength; your resurrection power is already at work in me. Let today be one more small death that leads somewhere alive. Amen.
