Day 5: Salt That Still Works

Jesus ends his hardest teaching in Luke 14 with the smallest image: salt. “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.”

In the ancient world, salt was often mixed with other minerals. Moisture could leach the actual salt out of it over time, leaving a white residue that still looked exactly like salt (same jar, same texture, same use at the table) but nothing left that could preserve or flavor anything. It was thrown out. Not because it looked wrong. Because it had quietly stopped working while still looking right.

That’s the warning underneath this whole week. It’s possible to attend, sing, serve, know the language, and still have a faith that’s stopped doing what faith is supposed to do in the world around you. Jesus doesn’t say useless salt gets a gentle demotion. He says it gets thrown out. That’s meant to unsettle you a little. Let it.

But Jesus also says, in the same breath elsewhere, that his people are the salt of the earth and the light of the world (Matthew 5:13–16), not as a threat, but as an identity he’s already given you. You don’t manufacture your own usefulness. You just stop letting comfort dilute what he’s already put in you.

A comfortable Christian can be admired from a distance. A faithful one is actually useful in the hands of God: to a spouse, a neighbor, a coworker, a kid who’s watching closer than you think.

- Where has your life gone quiet where it used to be distinct?

- What would change this week if the people closest to you could tell, without you announcing it, whose you belong to?

- Whose life would be different if you actually finished what you named on Day 1?

MAKE IT VISIBLE

Take the one concrete inch of obedience you’ve practiced this week and do the version of it that’s visible to someone else, not for an audience, but because faith that stays entirely private stops functioning like salt. Tell one person, specifically, what you’ve done this week and why. Let them ask you about it next week.

PRAYER

Lord, make me salt that still works, not just salt that still looks the part. I don’t want to be thrown out for uselessness while everyone assumes I’m fine. Make what I did with you this week visible in a way that points to you, not me. Amen.
