Day 1: The Question You Have Been Avoiding

Nehemiah was safe. He was comfortable. He had a palace job and a stable life, and nobody was requiring him to ask about Jerusalem. But he asked anyway. He wanted to know how things really were, not how he hoped they were, not how they looked from a distance.

Most of us have something we have been not-asking about. A relationship we sense has drifted. A habit we know has gotten heavier. A version of our faith that has gone quiet. We do not ask because we already suspect the answer, and suspecting is easier to live with than knowing.

But Nehemiah shows us that the willingness to ask the honest question is not the beginning of despair. It is the beginning of everything that comes after. You cannot rebuild what you will not look at.

"Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)

Nehemiah asked a hard question about a city. David asked an even harder one about his own heart. Both prayers start the same way: Lord, show me what is actually true.
