Day 4: Praying Toward Something Specific

Nehemiah's prayer does not end in a feeling. It ends in a request specific enough to be frightening. He is not praying in circles. He is praying toward an action: walking into the presence of the most powerful man in the known world, showing visible sorrow, and asking for permission to leave and rebuild.

A lot of our prayers stay safely vague because vague prayers do not require anything of us. God, help my marriage. God, fix my finances. God, change me. These are not wrong prayers, but they are often prayers we can say without any intention of moving. Nehemiah's prayer had a name in it, a timeline in it, and a risk in it.

God is not waiting for you to figure it out before you pray. But He does invite you to be honest enough about what you actually need that the prayer costs you something to say.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6 (NIV)
