What Is Baptism?

Why Is Baptism Such a Big Deal?

Baptism is a powerful, outward declaration of an inward transformation—it’s a big deal because Jesus made it a big deal.
After rising from the dead and before ascending into heaven, Jesus gave His followers this command:

“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 28:19

From the very beginning, baptism has been the first step of obedience for those who decide to follow Jesus (Acts 16:31-34).

What Does Baptism Symbolize?

Just like a wedding ring represents the commitment of marriage, baptism is a public declaration of your commitment to Jesus. It symbolizes that:

✅ You believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.
“For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with Him, you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.” – Colossians 2:12

✅ Your sins have been washed away.
“Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” – Acts 2:38

✅ You belong to God’s family.
“For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body.” – 1 Corinthians 12:12-13

✅ You are trusting Jesus for salvation, just like Noah trusted the ark to save him from judgment.
Baptism is a beautiful, personal, and public act of faith—it’s your way of saying, “I belong to Jesus.”

Who Should Be Baptized?

Baptism is for anyone who has made the decision to follow Jesus. At Radiant Church, we practice believers’ baptism, which means we baptize adults, students, and children old enough to understand and personally believe the gospel.

We do not baptize infants; instead, we offer child dedication services where parents commit to raising their children in a Christ-centered home.

“The people believed Philip’s message of Good News concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized.” – Acts 8:12

Is Baptism Required for Salvation?

No—baptism doesn’t save you. Salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The Bible tells us about the thief on the cross next to Jesus, who put his faith in Christ just before he died. He had no opportunity to be baptized, yet Jesus assured him:
“Today you will be with me in Paradise.” – Luke 23:43

Baptism is a step of obedience, not a requirement for salvation. It’s a way to declare publicly what Jesus has done in your life.

How Should I Be Baptized?

At Radiant Church, we baptize by immersion in water—just as Jesus was baptized. Being fully immersed best represents His death, burial, and resurrection.
